Airtel Africa has announced the successful testing of data and messaging services using SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile technology in Kenya, marking a major milestone in efforts to deliver satellite-to-mobile connectivity across the continent.
The test, conducted in areas with no existing network coverage, demonstrated the ability of Starlink Mobile to provide seamless connectivity where terrestrial mobile signals are unavailable. During the trial, users with 4G-compatible smartphones were automatically connected to Starlink’s network of over 650 satellites, enabling access to essential digital services.
The connectivity supported light data applications such as WhatsApp calls and messaging, navigation via maps, Facebook Messenger, and even financial transactions through the Airtel app. This ensured that users remained connected and could access key services even in remote and underserved locations.
Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa, Sunil Taldar, described the development as a significant step forward in bridging the digital divide.
“We are thrilled to move from announcement to actionable steps with our partners at SpaceX. This testing phase in Kenya is a testament to our commitment to expanding global access. By integrating Starlink Mobile’s technology, we are ensuring that our customers remain connected even when they travel beyond our terrestrial network,” he said.
Following the successful trial, Airtel Africa and Starlink Mobile plan to expand the service across Airtel’s 14 markets, subject to regulatory approvals in each country. The companies are also working towards introducing voice calls and enhanced data capabilities through the next-generation Starlink Mobile V2 technology, which aims to deliver broadband directly to mobile phones.
