The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme Area Command, has intensified efforts to eliminate trade barriers affecting the free movement of goods and services along the Lagos–Abidjan corridor through strategic collaboration with key stakeholders.
The Customs Area Controller disclosed this during a series of familiarisation visits to traditional rulers and heads of sister security agencies, underscoring the Command’s commitment to achieving its mandate in line with Federal Government economic policies.
During a visit to the Palace of the Oba Akran of Badagry Kingdom, the Area Controller expressed condolences to the royal family and people of Badagry over the passing of His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, described as a respected traditional ruler across border communities.
He stated that the visit was to formally introduce himself as the Area Controller of the Seme Command and to seek royal support in achieving the Service’s core objectives.
“Our priority remains revenue generation, trade facilitation, and suppression of smuggling. We believe that without the support and cooperation of traditional rulers, effective performance of our duties will be difficult,” he said.
Responding, the King Regent, Chief Abel Ogunbiyi, described the Controller as a son of the soil and assured him of the community’s support.
“Badagry is a peaceful town, and we will continue to collaborate with you in safeguarding our borders and promoting legitimate trade,” he said.
The Area Controller also visited the Onibereko of Ibereko Awori Kingdom, Oba Israel Okoya, who pledged continued cooperation with the Service.
“I welcome you to Badagry. Be assured that I will always engage my people whenever necessary. Our youth do not engage in illegal activities, and I will support you in achieving the government’s mandate,” the monarch said.
At the Palace of the Alapa of Apa Kingdom, Oba Oyekan Ajose Ilufemiloye commended Comptroller Kaila, describing him as a seasoned and professional officer.
“I assure you of my support in maintaining peace and order within my domain. Our border has remained peaceful due to the discipline of our youth, and your presence will further strengthen this,” he said.
As part of efforts to strengthen inter-agency collaboration, the Controller also visited the Headquarters of the 653 Nigerian Air Force Base in Ahanve, Badagry. The Commanding Officer, Group Captain Hungruy Medugu, reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to supporting the Customs Service.
“Our collaboration has contributed to notable successes within our area of responsibility. Your visit further strengthens the bond between our agencies,” he noted.
The familiarisation tour concluded with a visit to the Republic of Benin Police office, where the Controller reiterated his commitment to fostering cross-border cooperation and removing obstacles to the seamless movement of goods and services.
The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts by the Seme Area Command to enhance trade facilitation, strengthen security, and boost economic activities along the border corridor.
