The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, has strengthened its partnership with the Nigeria Police Force to combat smuggling and other trans-border crimes in Ogun State.
The renewed collaboration followed a high-level courtesy visit by the Area Commander of the Police in Idiroko and the Border Patrol Commander to the Customs command in Idiroko.
Speaking during the meeting, the Acting Customs Area Controller of the Ogun I Area Command, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, described the visit as a strategic step toward strengthening border security through coordinated operations and intelligence sharing.
Afeni noted that although the Idiroko border axis is currently calm, sustaining the stability requires continuous collaboration between security agencies to dismantle smuggling networks and prevent economic sabotage.
He emphasized that national security is a collective responsibility, urging officers of both the Customs Service and the Police Force to see one another as partners rather than competitors while carrying out their duties.
According to him, the partnership aligns with the policy direction of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, which prioritizes collaboration, consolidation, and innovation in the fight against economic crimes.
Also speaking, the Area Commander of the Police in Idiroko, ACP Adejumo Segun, expressed readiness to deepen the existing relationship between the two agencies.
He stated that the police would continue to provide tactical support to Customs officers, particularly in tackling illegal trade and other criminal activities along the Idiroko–Igolo border corridor, while ensuring the safety of residents in border communities.
Afeni reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustained cooperation with all security stakeholders.
“We will continue to synergize, share intelligence, and work together for the benefit of the state and the country,” he said.
The visit ended with both agencies pledging stronger cooperation to ensure improved security and economic stability in Ogun State and across Nigeria’s border communities.
