The Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, Oba Babatunde Akran of Badagry, has passed away at the age of 89.
The revered monarch died on Monday after over four decades of service on the throne. Until his death, he served as the permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
Before ascending the throne in the late 1970s, Oba Akran worked as a journalist and was widely respected for his intellect, leadership, and commitment to community development.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State described the monarch’s passing as a monumental loss to Badagry, Lagos, and Nigeria. In a statement issued by his media aide, Gboyega Akosile, the governor praised the late traditional ruler for his decades of service and his lasting impact.
Sanwo-Olu lauded the monarch’s wisdom, dedication to preserving cultural heritage, and efforts to drive the development of Badagry. He noted that Oba Akran left behind a legacy of unity, progress, and traditional pride.
He also described the monarch as a first-class ruler and respected journalist who made valuable contributions to the growth of his community, the state, and the nation.
Oba Akran served as a custodian of Badagry’s rich customs and traditions and was a stabilising force in the kingdom,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He highlighted the monarch’s efforts in promoting Badagry’s historical and cultural sites on both national and international platforms, which significantly boosted tourism and cultural exchange.
The governor extended condolences to the royal family, the people of Badagry, and traditional institutions across the state, urging all to preserve the late monarch’s legacy.
“On behalf of my wife, the government, and the people of Lagos State, I commiserate with the royal family, friends, associates, and the people of Badagry on the passing of this highly respected traditional ruler,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu prayed for God to grant the family and community the strength to bear the loss and encouraged them to honour Oba Akran’s memory through unity and continued progress.
