Dr. Ijeoma Akunyili, daughter of the late iconic Nigerian reformer Prof. Dora Akunyili, has been appointed Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Jersey City Medical Center in the United States.
Her appointment marks a historic milestone, as she becomes the first Black physician to hold the role since the hospital’s founding in 1882.
Dr. Akunyili brings a wealth of experience to the position, having previously served in senior leadership roles in various U.S. medical institutions. Her new role involves overseeing clinical operations, ensuring quality patient care, and driving performance improvements across the hospital.
Her appointment has been celebrated by Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, who see it as a proud continuation of her mother’s legacy of excellence and service.
