Dubai, 16 December 2025 – Airtel Africa has announced a groundbreaking strategic partnership with SpaceX to launch Starlink Direct-to-Cell satellite connectivity across its 14 operating markets. This initiative will provide mobile network access to Airtel customers in remote areas without traditional coverage, marking the *first satellite-to-mobile service for millions of Africans.
With over 174 million customers across the continent, Airtel Africa is the first mobile network operator in Africa to adopt Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell service, which is supported by more than 650 satellites in low-Earth orbit. The service will begin in 2026, initially offering support for SMS and text messaging, with voice and data to follow.
Through this partnership, smartphone users in previously unreachable regions will be able to connect via Starlink — the world’s largest 4G satellite network. This eliminates the need for terrestrial infrastructure in difficult terrain, further bridging the digital divide across the continent, Sunil Taldar, Managing Director and CEO of Airtel Africa, said:
