Governor Hope Uzodimma has called for a stronger regulatory framework to improve healthcare delivery in Nigeria, warning that unethical practices are contributing to declining standards in both public and private hospitals.
The governor expressed concern that some doctors in the public sector abandon their duties in government hospitals to focus on privately owned clinics, often operating outside approved guidelines. He noted that such practices persist due to weak accountability systems.
Uzodimma made the call during a dinner hosted for members of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in America (ANPA) at the Government House Banquet Hall in Owerri. He described the group’s medical outreach in Imo State as a significant boost to the state’s healthcare system.
He commended ANPA members for their week-long intervention, highlighting the large number of patients treated between April 10 and April 17. According to him, many of the cases handled could have worsened without their timely support.
The governor noted that despite Nigeria’s developmental challenges, such interventions from diaspora professionals serve as vital support for local communities. He urged ANPA to continue assisting Nigeria’s healthcare system and contribute to its improvement.
Uzodimma emphasized that Imo State is at a critical turning point and requires resilience, as well as sustainable solutions to its challenges. He stressed the need for an enabling environment that promotes long-term growth and prosperity.
He also cautioned that acquiring modern medical equipment alone is insufficient without adequately trained local professionals to operate and maintain them effectively.
Reiterating his stance, the governor urged Nigerian doctors to adhere strictly to established regulations and ethical standards, warning that continued misconduct, especially in public health facilities, undermines service delivery.
He concluded by appealing to ANPA members to support national leadership and sustain their humanitarian efforts, noting that their decision to offer free medical services reflects a strong commitment to improving lives.
