Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has introduced a monthly staff fitness programme to promote healthy living, improve employee wellbeing and enhance productivity across the institution.
The initiative, which will take place on the first Wednesday of every month, was introduced under the leadership of the Rector, Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, as part of efforts to encourage regular physical activity and foster a healthier workforce.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Abdul expressed delight that the programme had commenced after the necessary administrative preparations, stressing the importance of prioritising staff health and wellbeing.
He noted that workplace effectiveness extended beyond lectures, paperwork and routine administrative duties, emphasising the need for employees to maintain a healthy balance between their professional responsibilities and personal wellbeing.
According to the Rector, although the college-organised exercise would hold monthly, staff members should develop the habit of engaging in regular physical activities independently.
He commended employees who participated in the inaugural session and expressed optimism that the programme would be sustained.
Abdul also encouraged participants to share their experiences and provide feedback to help the institution improve the initiative and attract greater participation from staff across departments.
YABATECH Targets Healthier, More Productive Workforce
The Director of Sports at YABATECH, Mr. Peter Oyebanji, explained that the monthly fitness exercise was designed to support staff members’ physical and mental wellbeing.
He emphasised that employees needed to remain physically active rather than concentrating exclusively on their professional duties, including marking scripts, lecturing and writing official memoranda.
Oyebanji also expressed appreciation for the Rector’s presence at the inaugural exercise, describing the initiative as an important step towards promoting a healthier working environment.
Medical Director Highlights Benefits of Regular Exercise
The College Medical Director, Dr. T. Nubi, urged staff members to embrace regular physical activity, noting that exercise could contribute to better health and improved quality of life.
He explained that maintaining an active lifestyle could offer long-term health benefits, encouraging employees to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines.
Nubi also noted that regular exercise could help in the management of certain health conditions, including hypertension, when combined with appropriate medical care.
He therefore encouraged staff members to sustain the habit rather than treating the monthly college-organised exercise as an isolated activity.
Management Reaffirms Support for Staff Wellbeing
The Registrar of the college, Mrs. Henrietta Adebola Badejo, who spoke on behalf of the Governing Council and Management, expressed appreciation to employees who participated in the inaugural exercise.
Badejo reaffirmed Management’s commitment to sustaining the programme, stressing that staff health and wellbeing remained important to the institution.
She commended the organisers for their efforts and thanked participants for turning out for the exercise, while wishing them a productive working day.
The monthly fitness programme is expected to encourage a culture of regular physical activity among employees and reinforce the institution’s commitment to staff welfare, healthy living and workplace productivity.
