From Africa to Europe, Asia and the Americas, hydration advice is often clouded by myths. Here is what science says about water, other drinks, food and the body’s changing fluid needs.

Across the world, few health messages are repeated as often as the instruction to “drink more water”.
From fitness influencers and wellness coaches to family conversations and social media posts, hydration has become surrounded by seemingly simple rules: that only plain water counts, that everyone needs three litres a day, or that tea and coffee inevitably dehydrate the body.
But the science is considerably more nuanced.
The human body does not distinguish hydration according to whether fluid comes from a glass labelled “water”. Water contained in other beverages and many foods also contributes to total fluid intake.
The more important health question is therefore not simply whether a drink contains water, but what else comes with it — and whether the amount consumed meets an individual’s needs.
Water: The Body’s Essential Currency
Water is fundamental to human survival.
It helps regulate body temperature, lubricate joints, protect sensitive tissues, transport nutrients and assist the removal of waste. Every day, the body loses water through urine, sweat, breathing and bowel movements.
When those losses exceed fluid intake, dehydration can occur.
Mild dehydration may be associated with thirst, tiredness, headache, dizziness, constipation and reduced physical or mental performance. More severe dehydration can become life-threatening, particularly when accompanied by extreme heat, prolonged physical exertion, vomiting or diarrhoea.
However, health professionals caution against attributing every episode of fatigue, headache or dizziness to dehydration.
Such symptoms can have numerous causes, including illness, medication, poor sleep, stress and nutritional problems. Persistent or severe symptoms warrant medical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.
Do Other Drinks Actually Count?
Yes.
Water contained in fruit juice, milk, soft drinks, tea, coffee and other beverages contributes to overall fluid intake.
This is an important distinction because hydration and nutrition are not the same thing.
A sugary soft drink can contribute fluid while simultaneously delivering substantial amounts of added sugar and calories. Regularly consuming large quantities of sugar-sweetened beverages can therefore create nutritional concerns even though the drinks contribute to hydration.
That is one reason water remains such a strong everyday choice: it hydrates without adding sugar or calories.
The Tea and Coffee Hydration Myth
One of the world’s persistent hydration myths is that caffeinated drinks automatically dehydrate the body.
The reality is more complicated.
Caffeine can have a diuretic effect, meaning it can increase urine production. However, the fluid contained in moderate amounts of tea and coffee generally contributes to overall hydration in healthy people.
The nutritional picture can change considerably when drinks are loaded with sugar, syrups, cream or other calorie-dense additions.
The issue, therefore, is not that tea and coffee suddenly cease to be fluids. Rather, how they are prepared and how much is consumed matter for overall health.
Why Sugary Drinks Are Not a Substitute for Water
The global beverage market has made it increasingly easy to confuse hydration with consumption.
Soft drinks, energy drinks, sweetened juices, flavoured beverages and other products are widely marketed as refreshing choices. Some contain water and electrolytes, while others contain considerable amounts of sugar.
For most people, however, there is little nutritional advantage in routinely replacing water with sugar-sweetened beverages.
The fact that a drink contributes to fluid intake does not automatically make it a healthy everyday choice.
Alcohol Is Different
Alcohol should not be relied upon as a source of hydration.
Alcohol can increase urine production and may contribute to fluid loss, particularly when consumed in larger quantities. The effect can become more significant when alcohol consumption occurs alongside heat exposure, exercise or other circumstances that increase fluid losses.
For hydration, water and other appropriate non-alcoholic fluids remain safer choices.
There Is No Universal Three-Litre Rule
Perhaps one of the most widespread hydration claims is that every adult must drink a fixed amount of water — often three litres — every day.
There is no single volume that is appropriate for every person.
Fluid requirements vary according to factors including body size, age, sex, physical activity, climate, diet, pregnancy and medical conditions.
A construction worker labouring under intense tropical heat may require considerably more fluid than someone spending the day in an air-conditioned office.
Likewise, a marathon runner, farmer, outdoor worker or athlete can have very different hydration requirements from a sedentary individual.
Illness can also change fluid needs. Fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and heavy sweating can increase fluid losses.
At the same time, more water is not always better.
People with certain kidney, heart or liver conditions may be advised to restrict fluids. Excessive water consumption can also cause dangerous disturbances in blood sodium levels.
The sensible approach is therefore not to follow a universal litre target but to consider individual circumstances and, where necessary, seek professional medical advice.
The Forgotten Source: Food
Hydration does not come exclusively from a bottle or glass.
Many foods contain significant amounts of water and contribute to total daily fluid intake.
Water-rich fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, oranges, cucumber and tomatoes can form part of a healthy diet while contributing to hydration.
This is relevant globally because diets and food traditions differ widely. From tropical fruits in Africa and Latin America to soups, vegetables and other water-rich foods consumed across Europe and Asia, hydration is built into many ordinary meals.
Heat Changes the Equation
Climate is another reason hydration cannot be reduced to a universal prescription.
People living or working in hot and humid environments can lose substantial amounts of fluid through sweating. The same applies to anyone engaged in prolonged physical activity.
This makes hydration particularly important in tropical regions, but heat-related dehydration is not exclusively a tropical problem. Heatwaves are a global public-health concern, affecting populations across continents.
Older adults, young children, athletes and outdoor workers can be particularly vulnerable when temperatures rise.
When Hydration Becomes a Medical Issue
For most healthy people, maintaining hydration is a routine part of everyday life.
But severe dehydration can require urgent medical attention.
Warning signs can include extreme weakness, confusion, fainting, very little or no urination and other serious changes in physical condition.
People experiencing significant fluid loss through persistent vomiting or diarrhoea may also require medical assessment and, in some circumstances, appropriate oral rehydration solutions rather than simply drinking large quantities of plain water.
The correct response depends on the cause and severity of the fluid loss.
The Bigger Lesson About Hydration
The global hydration conversation has become unnecessarily complicated.
Water is essential. Other beverages can also contribute to hydration. Water-rich foods matter. Caffeine does not automatically cancel out the fluid in tea or coffee. Sugary beverages can provide fluid while still being poor everyday nutritional choices. And the idea that every adult must consume exactly three litres of water daily is an oversimplification.
Perhaps the most important lesson is that healthy hydration is not a competition to consume the greatest possible quantity of water.
It is about replacing the fluid the body loses, choosing healthier beverages most of the time, recognising changing needs during heat and physical activity, and understanding when illness requires medical attention.
From Lagos to London, Nairobi to New York, Mumbai to Melbourne, the basic principle remains the same:
Hydration is essential to health — but good hydration is about more than simply counting glasses of water.
Water remains one of the healthiest and simplest places to start.
