A tragic road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has claimed the life of a woman who recently arrived from the United Kingdom for a wedding ceremony in Abeokuta.
The fatal incident occurred on Monday evening near the Christopher University axis of the highway, according to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE). The agency’s spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the crash happened at about 5:48 p.m.
The victim was travelling in a white Toyota Camry with two other passengers when the vehicle reportedly rammed into a truck moving in the same direction. Eyewitnesses suggested that excessive speed may have contributed to the collision.
Of the three occupants in the car — one man and two women — one of the female passengers died from injuries sustained in the crash. The two others were injured and taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Akinbiyi further explained that preliminary findings indicate the deceased and one of the injured passengers had just returned to Nigeria from the UK and were on their way to Abeokuta for a wedding ceremony when the accident occurred.
The injured victims were rushed to Famobis Hospital and Redeemed Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue of Redeemed Hospital.
TRACE expressed condolences to the bereaved family and warned motorists against reckless driving, particularly speeding, which remains a leading cause of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways.
The incident adds to growing safety concerns on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a major route known for frequent accidents. It also comes months after a separate crash in the same corridor involving Anthony Joshua, further highlighting the dangers associated with the road.
