Siminalayi Fubara has announced his withdrawal from the governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the decision was made after extensive consultations and in the interest of peace, stability, and unity in Rivers State.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Rivers State governor said he took the “difficult but necessary decision” after deep reflection with family, friends, and associates.
Fubara stated that although the decision may disappoint many of his supporters, leadership sometimes requires personal sacrifice for the greater good.
“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he said.
The governor expressed gratitude to his supporters for their loyalty, prayers, and sacrifices throughout the political process, acknowledging the disappointment many may feel over his withdrawal.
According to him, his silence in recent weeks was “deliberate and strategic,” guided by the higher interest of Rivers State and its people.
Drawing on a traditional proverb, Fubara said some realities are better handled quietly in the interest of peace and wisdom.
“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose,” he stated.
He added that he had faced immense pressure and difficult choices but maintained that his love for Rivers State remained greater than personal ambition.
Fubara also thanked the APC for the platform and support extended to him during the process and expressed appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his encouragement and support.
He urged party members and supporters to remain committed to the APC and work toward building a stronger and more united future.
The governor stressed that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as an act of weakness, fear, or surrender, insisting that the decision was driven by conviction and sacrifice.
“Let it be clearly understood that I stepped aside from participating in the upcoming Rivers State gubernatorial election not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” he said.
Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving the people of Rivers State until the end of his tenure.
