Gombe, Nigeria — At least seven journalists have died and four others were injured in a tragic road accident in Gombe State, authorities have confirmed. The fatal crash occurred on Monday evening December 29, 2025, as the media workers were returning from a wedding ceremony in the Gombe South Senatorial District.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Gombe State Sector Commander, Samson Kaura, the journalists were traveling in a bus belonging to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) when the vehicle was involved in a lone accident along the Billiri–Kumo road.
Preliminary findings by the FRSC indicate that a possible tyre burst may have caused the driver to lose control, leading the bus to veer off the road. “From the information available to us, 11 people were involved in the crash. Sadly, seven of them died on the spot, while four others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Kaura said.
The deceased include several members of the media community, notably staff of the *Nigerian Television Authority (NTA)* and other journalists attached to various media outfits.
The injured victims were rushed to nearby health facilities in Gombe where they are receiving medical attention, the FRSC confirmed. Rescue teams from the corps were on the ground conducting operations and clearing the crash site.
The tragedy has sparked grief across Nigeria’s media community, with colleagues and professional associations mourning the loss of committed journalists who were part of a delegation that had attended a colleague’s wedding.
Local authorities have said a full investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the accident, and further updates are expected as the probe continues.
