The Senate has passed the National Health Act Amendment Bill 2026 for second reading, seeking to establish emergency treatment standards and referral protocols in healthcare facilities across the country.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, seeks to address delays in emergency medical care and prevent avoidable deaths by introducing enforceable standards for the treatment of patients in medical emergencies.
Leading the debate on the bill on Wednesday, Yar’Adua said the proposed amendment would strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare delivery system by ensuring that patients receive prompt and appropriate medical attention during emergencies.
He explained that the proposed legislation would also establish clear guidelines for emergency response and referrals among healthcare facilities nationwide.
The amendment further seeks to strengthen accountability in the health sector and improve access to life-saving medical services, particularly for patients requiring urgent medical intervention.
The bill is expected to undergo further legislative consideration as it progresses through the Senate.
