The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, citing allegations of gross misconduct.
During plenary on Monday, January 8, 2026, the Leader of the House, Major Jack, read out the notice of allegations against the Governor, while Deputy Leader Linda Stewart presented similar allegations against the Deputy Governor.
The impeachment notice, grounded in Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), lists key allegations including:
– Failure to present the state budget
– Unauthorized spending of state funds
– Withholding of salaries and funds due to the House of Assembly, Clerk, and Assembly Service Commission
– Appointments made without legislative screening
– Demolition of the Assembly complex
According to the lawmakers, these actions indicate the governor and his deputy lack the capacity to perform their constitutional duties.
Speaker of the House pledged to serve the impeachment notices to the Governor and Deputy Governor within the seven-day window mandated by law.
