The Edo State Government, under Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced the immediate suspension of revenue collection activities by transport unions and associated groups, citing extortion, harassment, and illegal cash collection.
In a government special announcement dated August 5, 2025, the state accused the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), ANNEWAT, Drivers on Wheel, and their operatives of violating the terms of engagement with the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS). These groups are no longer authorized to collect levies, dues, or taxes from motorists, traders, or any member of the public.
The ban also affects Atalapkpa Recovery Concept Ltd, a private consultant accused of collaborating in the illegal activities. The company, reportedly linked with Tony Kabaka, has been suspended for betraying public trust.
The government described these actions as economic sabotage and a threat to law and order, warning that it will not tolerate the use of force or intimidation in the name of revenue collection.
