Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have recovered a stolen 2016 Toyota Camry from a hotel in Ifo, less than eight hours after the vehicle was reported missing, with one suspect arrested.
The vehicle, reportedly belonging to an Indian national based at the Ilupeju Industrial Estate, Lagos, was allegedly stolen on September 9, 2026, by the owner’s driver, identified as Waidi Olaide Kolawale.
According to the police, Kolawale had been employed only two days before the incident and told his employer that he was taking the vehicle to a nearby vulcaniser to repair a tyre.
The police said he allegedly failed to return with the vehicle, prompting the owner to report the matter and initiate electronic tracking.
The vehicle was subsequently tracked to the Ifo axis, with the information relayed to the Divisional Police Officer, Ifo Division, CSP Kamorudeen Olabisi.
The DPO reportedly deployed surveillance and anti-robbery operatives, who tracked the vehicle through several locations before locating it at a hotel in Ifo at about 8:30 p.m.
The police said Kolawale fled on sighting the operatives, taking the vehicle’s ignition key with him, while an alleged accomplice, identified as Monday Adetunji, was arrested at the scene.
Preliminary investigation, according to the Command, indicated that the suspects had allegedly approached a mechanic to remove the vehicle’s catalytic converter, but the mechanic declined.
The recovered vehicle has been secured by the police, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the Ifo operatives for what he described as their professionalism, vigilance and swift response.
The Command also advised vehicle owners to use reliable tracking devices and additional anti-theft measures such as steering and tyre locks.
It urged members of the public to exercise due diligence when entrusting vehicles, property or access to homes and businesses to others.
The police further advised hoteliers to strengthen guest and vehicle verification procedures, maintain accurate records and promptly report suspicious persons, vehicles or activities.
