Notorious armed bandit leader, Mustapha Babaro, has reportedly imposed a N50 million levy on Yargoje and several surrounding communities in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.
According to local sources, Babaro issued a stern warning on Sunday, stating that any village that fails to contribute its portion of the levy will face brutal attacks. The bandit allegedly gave the communities a deadline to raise the amount, causing widespread fear and tension across the affected areas.
Residents say the ultimatum has left many in panic, as the communities—already plagued by insecurity and economic hardship—struggle to meet the demand.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but security agencies have reportedly been alerted. The situation underscores the growing threat posed by armed groups operating with impunity in parts of the Northwest.
The imposition of such levies by bandits has become an increasingly common tactic used to extort rural communities in Nigeria.
