The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning regarding the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachets across Nigeria. These fake products closely mimic the original packaging and branding of Promasidor Nigeria Ltd but are not manufactured or distributed by the company.
Promasidor ceased production of the “Our Milk” variant in September 2023, replacing it with “Our Creamy Goodness.” The counterfeit products unlawfully bear the Cowbell brand name, NAFDAC registration number, and packaging design.
Genuine sachets feature the updated “Our Creamy Goodness” artwork, while counterfeits use the outdated “Our Milk” design.
Authentic products have laser-printed batch details; counterfeits use ink printing.
Legitimate sachets have coding in the designated area; fakes have it misplaced.
Original products are machine-sealed with clean edges; counterfeits show rough, manually done sealing.
The counterfeit milk does not resemble real milk in texture or appearance.
Health Risks:
NAFDAC warns that consuming counterfeit milk poses serious health hazards, including exposure to toxic chemicals, unapproved additives, or diluted ingredients. Risks include foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions, organ damage, and, in severe cases, death. Infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly are particularly vulnerable.
NAFDAC’s Response:
The agency has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and remove counterfeit products from circulation. Consumers are urged to be vigilant, purchase products only from licensed suppliers, and report any suspected counterfeit items. Reports can be made to the nearest NAFDAC office, via the agency’s hotline, or through email.
