The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of a woman following a fatal road accident on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the agency said the tragic incident occurred at the Ilaje inward Iyana Oworo axis of the bridge and involved a head-on collision between two Toyota Sienna vehicles.
According to LASTMA, the crash was severe, highlighting the dangers associated with reckless driving, particularly excessive speeding.
Operatives of the agency, who were on routine patrol along the route, responded swiftly after receiving a distress alert. They immediately implemented traffic control measures, including the deployment of safety cones to secure the accident scene and prevent further incidents.
Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Oworonsoki Division, also arrived promptly to document the scene and commence necessary investigations.
The agency confirmed that the accident claimed the life of an adult female, identified as a mother, while her 30-year-old daughter, who was in the same vehicle, survived the crash.
“The remains of the deceased have been evacuated by security operatives, while traffic officials maintained control of the scene to ensure smooth vehicular movement and prevent secondary accidents,” the statement said.
LASTMA further disclosed that one of the drivers involved fled the scene immediately after the collision, while the second driver was apprehended by its officers and handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, warned motorists against reckless driving, stressing that over-speeding remains one of the leading causes of fatal accidents on major highways.
He urged road users to adhere strictly to speed limits and maintain discipline while driving, especially on busy routes such as the Third Mainland Bridge.
The agency reiterated its commitment to ensuring road safety and maintaining orderly traffic flow across Lagos State.
