Mariam Abacha, widow of Nigeria’s former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has defended her late husband against long-standing allegations surrounding the so-called “Abacha loot.”
Speaking during an interview with TVC News, she questioned persistent claims that large sums of money were stolen and stashed abroad during her husband’s administration, insisting that no concrete evidence has been presented to substantiate the allegations.
Mariam Abacha argued that funds reportedly linked to the late military ruler have remained a subject of speculation for years, adding that she has yet to see proof supporting claims of illicit transfers.
She further stated that money said to have been recovered and attributed to her late husband “vanished” within a short period after his death, insisting that he is being unfairly blamed without verified facts.
The former First Lady maintained that the narrative surrounding the alleged “Abacha loot” has persisted for decades without sufficient accountability or clarity, and called for transparency and evidence in discussing the matter.
