A tragic incident occurred in Aba, Abia State, on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, where a yet-to-be-identified man was electrocuted while attempting to vandalize a transformer at Omuma Road. The man’s lifeless body was found dangling from the transformer in the early hours of the day.
The victim, presumed to be around 35 years old, was electrocuted while trying to steal high-tension electricity cables from the transformer.
Eyewitnesses reported that the deceased had climbed the transformer at night, and the electrocution occurred when the power surged, killing him instantly. Two other suspected vandals who were with him reportedly fled the scene immediately.
Residents gathered at the scene, expressing disappointment that the attempted vandalism had plunged their community into darkness once again. They emphasized the need for stronger community collaboration to protect critical public infrastructure.
Aba Power condemned the incident, describing it as unfortunate and emphasizing the dangers of unauthorized access to electricity assets.
The company warned vandals to desist from their actions, highlighting the risks to both themselves and the community’s power supply.
Aba Power’s Manager, Branding and Communication, Edise Ekong, called for increased collaboration between the community and the power company to safeguard electricity assets .
