Professor Mahmood Yakubu has stepped down as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), handing over to May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve in an acting capacity.
Agbamuche is the longest-serving National Commissioner at the electoral body.
The development was announced on Tuesday by Yakubu during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
He appealed for the support of the commissioners and directors for Agbamuche pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.
