A 55-year-old motorist escaped unhurt after a moving train collided with his Honda car at the PWD railway line in Lagos, leaving the vehicle badly damaged and causing traffic congestion around the area.
Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), working alongside security personnel, have rescued a 55-year-old motorist following a collision between a moving train and a Honda car at the PWD railway line in Lagos.
The incident occurred on Friday as the train travelled towards Agege, with the Honda car, bearing registration number EKY 902 JT, sustaining extensive damage in the collision.
Despite the severity of the impact, the driver reportedly escaped without injury, while no casualty was recorded at the scene.
LASTMA, Security Operatives Clear Railway Track
According to a statement issued by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, the agency’s operatives and security personnel responded promptly to the incident.
Their coordinated intervention enabled them to rescue the motorist and remove the wrecked vehicle from the railway track.
The swift operation also allowed the train to resume its journey towards Agege after the obstruction had been cleared.
However, traffic movement around the PWD axis remained severely disrupted following the incident, with motorists experiencing considerable congestion along the affected corridor.
The damaged Honda car was subsequently handed over to security personnel for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
LASTMA Boss Commends Emergency Response
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the agency’s operatives and security personnel for their prompt response and effective coordination during the emergency.
Bakare-Oki praised their vigilance, professionalism and collaboration in managing an incident that could have resulted in serious injuries or loss of life.
He stressed that effective cooperation among emergency responders, coupled with situational awareness and rapid intervention, remained essential to reducing the consequences of road and railway accidents.
The LASTMA boss also called on motorists to exercise extreme caution when approaching railway crossings and designated train corridors.
He warned drivers against attempting to cross railway tracks when a train was approaching or already in motion, noting that disregard for railway safety regulations could lead to devastating consequences.
Motorists Warned Against Railway Safety Violations
LASTMA urged motorists and other road users to remain vigilant, exercise sound judgment and comply strictly with established traffic and railway safety regulations.
The authority reiterated that protecting human life must remain the priority of every road user, adding that responsible driving and adherence to safety instructions could help prevent avoidable accidents.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with railway crossings and the need for motorists to exercise patience rather than risk crossing tracks when it is unsafe to do so.
