Speaking during the visit, Comptroller Afeni expressed gratitude to the monarchs for their warm reception and commended their continued role in sustaining peace and stability within Ipokia. He described the community as home and stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and traditional institutions, in line with the Comptroller-General of Customs’ policy focus on synergy and community engagement.
The Acting Area Controller noted that traditional rulers remain key partners in the fight against smuggling and the promotion of national security. He reiterated the core mandates of the NCS, including trade facilitation, revenue generation, and anti-smuggling operations.
Comptroller Afeni further urged the traditional council to continue sensitising residents on the dangers of smuggling and illicit trade, warning that such activities undermine national security and economic growth.
He also highlighted the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives introduced by the Comptroller-General of Customs, explaining that the programmes are designed to discourage smuggling while promoting sustainable development in host communities.
In his response, the Onipokia of Ipokia, Oba Yisa Sola Adeniyi Olaniyan, praised the Comptroller-General’s reform-driven leadership and commitment to global best practices. He welcomed Comptroller Afeni as a “son of the soil” and pledged the full support and cooperation of the Ipokia Kingdom.
The monarch encouraged the Acting Controller to discharge his duties “without fear or favour,” reaffirming that Ipokia remains a peaceful and law-abiding community committed to supporting the Federal Government’s economic and security objectives.
