Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Igboho, has announced the formation of a 50,000-member security network named “Ija Ekun” (Tiger’s War), saying the group is prepared to confront banditry, armed herders, and terrorist activity across parts of the South-West and Kwara State.
The announcement follows recent security incidents, including the killing of a teacher in Oyo State and reported abductions of schoolchildren—developments Igboho described as a breaking point for affected communities.
He said the proposed outfit has already been trained and structured, but would still await official approval from relevant federal and state authorities before moving into forest zones allegedly used as hideouts by criminal elements.
“Ija Ekun is ready. I will not wait for approval anymore,” Igboho was quoted as saying.
He stressed that while the initiative is prepared for deployment, it would not operate outside legal authorisation. However, he warned that continued insecurity and delays in government response could leave communities with no option but to organise self-defence mechanisms.
Igboho also called on South-West governors, traditional rulers, and security agencies to urgently consider approval for coordinated operations, claiming that key criminal hideouts had already been identified.
The announcement has reignited debate over regional security structures such as the Amotekun Corps, alongside wider concerns about the legality, oversight, and potential risks of non-state armed groups.
Supporters of the initiative say it reflects growing frustration over persistent insecurity and the need for stronger community protection measures.
However, critics warn that the expansion of armed civilian formations could heighten tensions and complicate coordination within Nigeria’s existing security architecture.
I don’t see anything wrong with what Sunday Igboho is about doing except that if this is done else where like South East the whole Nigerian Nation will bring a name tag to it “IPOB” or Secession and the likes but still the Insurgency in Nigeria is Government INFLICTED so I don’t see Sunday Igboho succeeding in this.
