The World Innovators University Institute (WIU) has commended the Federal Government of Nigeria for approving and unveiling a new national curriculum for basic and senior secondary education, calling it a “decisive step toward future-ready learning for every child.”
Slated for phased implementation from the 2025/2026 academic session, the curriculum modernises Nigeria’s education system by rebalancing subject loads for deeper learning and integrating key 21st-century skills such as digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), coding, robotics, media literacy, entrepreneurship, and citizenship education.
In a statement earlier this month, WIU pledged full support to help translate the policy into practical impact in classrooms across the country.
“By foregrounding digital competencies, problem-solving, entrepreneurship, and civic literacy, this reform aligns schooling with the demands of a fast-changing economy and society,” said Prof. Monday Anyairo, Global President of World Innovators University.
Prof. Monday Anyairo noted that the Institute is ready to collaborate with federal and state governments, schools, teacher training institutions, and development partners to support this vital transition.
Echoing his remarks, Prof. Dr. Ashok K. Gupta, Provost of World Innovators University, stressed the pivotal role of educators in the success of the reform. “Great curricula become great learning only through well-supported teachers. Our immediate focus is practical: equipping educators to teach AI and coding safely and confidently, and providing low-cost, open resources that work in real Nigerian classrooms,”he said.
To support an effective and inclusive rollout, WIU announced a comprehensive multi-year assistance package for Nigeria, covering 2025 to 2027. The initiative is anchored on six strategic pillars, starting with teacher capacity development, which includes a suite of short courses and hands-on training in AI literacy, coding pedagogy, and digital citizenship. The first phase targets 1,000 teachers across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
In addition, the Institute will support educators by providing Open Educational Resources (OER), including free, curriculum-aligned lesson plans, worksheets, and activities designed specifically for low-bandwidth and offline environments.
To further enhance implementation, WIU plans to assist schools in developing innovation labs through the provision of affordable “lab-in-a-box” starter kits for robotics and STEM activities tailored to resource-constrained settings.
Key components of the support package also include assessment toolkits, implementation research, and the development of policy partnerships with relevant government bodies, development agencies, and regulatory institutions to ensure the curriculum reform is effective and sustainable.
The new national curriculum addresses a pressing national need for a more skills-aligned, employment-focused education system that also promotes national unity. WIU has formally extended an invitation to State Ministries of Education, SUBEBs, and other stakeholders interested in hands-on support for implementing the new curriculum.
