The Federal Government has officially banned the collection of installation fees for prepaid electricity meters across Nigeria.
The directive, issued through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), prohibits Distribution Companies (DisCos) from charging consumers any fees for the installation of prepaid meters under the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP).
According to the commission, the move is aimed at protecting electricity consumers from illegal charges, promoting transparency in billing, and accelerating nationwide access to prepaid meters. NERC warned that any DisCo found violating the directive would face strict regulatory sanctions.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring fair electricity billing and urged consumers to report any demand for installation fees by DisCos to the appropriate regulatory authorities.
