The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a flood alert for 11 states, warning that 32 locations across the country may experience heavy rainfall likely to result in flooding between September 14 and 18, 2025.
The alert, released on Sunday by the National Flood Early Warning Centre of the ministry, was signed by the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani.
Flooding remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing environmental challenges, often leading to displacement, destruction of farmlands, and outbreaks of waterborne diseases. In recent years, persistent heavy rains have intensified flooding across several states, causing significant loss of lives and property.
The statement read in part:
The following locations and their environs are likely to witness heavy rainfall that MAY lead to flooding within the prediction period of September 14–18, 2025.
Affected Areas:
– Adamawa State:Ganye, Natubi
– Benue State: Abinsi, Agyo, Gogo, Ito, Makurdi, Udoma, Ukpiam
– Nasarawa State: Agima, Rukubi, Odogbo
– Taraba State: Beli, Serti, Donga
– Delta State: Umugboma, Umukwata, Abraka, Aboh, Okpo-Krika
– Niger State: Rijau
– Kebbi State: Ribah
– Kano State: Gwarzo, Karaye
– Katsina State: Jibia
– Sokoto State: Makira
– Zamfara State: Kaura Namoda, Shinkafi, Maradun, Gusau, Anka, Bungudu
The government also advised residents along the floodplains of River Gongola up to Numan, as well as those along Rivers Benue and Niger up to Lokoja, to relocate immediately due to rising water levels.
