The National Sports Commission has described the death of former Super Eagles forward, Michael Eneramo, as a painful loss to Nigerian football following reports that he collapsed and died in Kaduna on Friday.
Eneramo, a former Nigerian international, was said to have slumped during a routine football activity in the early hours of April 24, 2026. Initial reports indicated that the incident may have been linked to a cardiac-related emergency.
There were also accounts suggesting that the ex-striker collapsed during a local friendly match in Ungwan Yelwa area of Kaduna shortly after returning for the second half, having featured in the opening period.
In an official reaction, the National Sports Commission said it received the news with deep shock and sadness, describing Eneramo’s passing as devastating to the sporting community.
“The National Sports Commission has received with deep shock and sadness the news of the passing of former Super Eagles striker, Michael Eneramo.
“The NSC extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former teammates, and the entire Nigerian football community. His contributions to Nigerian football will be remembered with pride, and his legacy will continue to inspire the next generation. May his soul rest in peace,” the statement read.
Eneramo earned 10 international caps and scored three goals for Nigeria during his career. He enjoyed a successful club career across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, gaining prominence during his time with Espérance Sportive de Tunis, where he became a fan favourite.
He also played in Turkey for clubs including Beşiktaş J.K., Sivasspor, and İstanbul Başakşehir F.K., earning a reputation as a strong and dependable striker.
His death has continued to draw tributes from across the football community, with many remembering him as one of Nigeria’s notable football exports of his generation.
