The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has called on the National Assembly of Nigeria to enact robust legislation that will protect whistleblowers and strengthen transparency in the fight against corruption.
Olukoyede made the appeal on Thursday, March 12, 2026, during a nationwide sensitisation programme on the implementation of the whistleblowing policy held in Calabar.
Speaking on the theme, “Benefits of the Whistleblowing Policy in the Fight Against Corruption in Nigeria,” he emphasised the urgent need for a comprehensive legal framework to safeguard whistleblowers from victimisation and remove bureaucratic obstacles in accessing financial rewards attached to disclosures.
“I reiterate that we need a robust Act of the National Assembly to protect those who risk their lives by exposing corruption. It is concerning that within the ECOWAS region, only Ghana and Senegal have enacted whistleblower protection laws,” he said.
The EFCC chairman, who was represented by the Acting Zonal Director in Uyo, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, Oshodi Johnson, noted that the policy should primarily drive the prevention of corruption rather than be viewed solely as a means of financial reward.
He urged lawmakers to domesticate Article 33 of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which provides measures for protecting individuals who report corruption cases.
Participants at the event included representatives from anti-corruption agencies, lawmakers, security agencies, development partners, and other stakeholders committed to promoting accountability and transparency in Nigeria.
