Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, as he reflected on his role in advancing the administration’s economic agenda.
In a statement, Edun thanked the President for appointing him at the start of the administration in May 2023. He noted that he initially served as head of the Presidential Transition Committee, later as Special Adviser on Monetary Policy, before his appointment as finance minister.
He described his time in office as an honour, stating that he contributed to the implementation of key economic reforms during a critical period in Nigeria’s development.
According to Edun, the Tinubu administration inherited challenging economic conditions but has since made notable progress through coordinated efforts across government. He said the reforms helped stabilise the macroeconomic environment, strengthen fiscal sustainability, and lay the foundation for inclusive and long-term growth.
Highlighting some outcomes, he stated that economic growth improved from about 2 per cent to over 4 per cent, while inflation declined from 35 per cent to 15 per cent. He attributed these gains to increased investor confidence, improved economic coordination, and efforts to restore public trust.
The former minister also acknowledged the contributions of members of the Federal Executive Council, state governors, and partners in both the public and private sectors, as well as professionals supporting Nigeria’s economic transformation.
While noting that significant work remains, Edun expressed confidence in the country’s economic direction, stating that the foundations for sustained progress have been firmly established.
He further appreciated stakeholders, both domestic and international, for their collaboration and support throughout his tenure.
Edun wished his successor and the administration continued success in implementing policies aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians, while reaffirming his commitment to national service and continued support for the President.
