The Nigeria Customs Service has celebrated Superintendent of Customs Nafisat Balogun for earning a commercial multi-engine pilot license in the United States, marking a historic milestone in the Service.
The ceremony, organised by the Nigeria Customs Technical Hangar Service, brought together senior officers, management staff, and colleagues to honour her achievement, which also makes her the first female pilot in the Nigeria Customs Service.
‘A Historic Milestone for the Service’
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of the Customs Technical Hangar Service and retired Comptroller of Customs, Captain Kuhi Mbaya, described Balogun’s journey as inspiring and transformative.
He noted that she transitioned from being a cabin attendant to a certified commercial pilot, describing the development as a major breakthrough for the Service.
“For the first time, we now have a female pilot in the NCS. She has set a record, and it is important that we celebrate this milestone,” he said.
Mbaya added that her achievement reflects growing opportunities within the Service and encouraged more women to pursue careers in specialised fields.
“This shows there are no limits. The glass ceiling has been broken, and with determination and consistency, more women can achieve their dreams,” he added.
He also commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for supporting gender inclusion and capacity development within the organisation.
‘A Journey of Hard Work and Support’ — Balogun
In her response, Superintendent of Customs (Pilot) Nafisat Balogun expressed gratitude for the recognition and support she received throughout her training.
She described the journey as challenging but rewarding, noting that encouragement from the leadership of the Service played a key role in her success.
“I am truly honoured and humbled by this recognition. This journey has not been easy, but I am grateful for the support, encouragement, and belief shown in me,” she said.
Balogun also appreciated the Comptroller-General and management team for their backing, describing her achievement as a product of collective support.
“I sincerely appreciate the leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service. This accomplishment reflects that support,” she added.
She reaffirmed her commitment to professionalism, discipline, and excellence in service.
“I will continue to serve with dedication, integrity, and professionalism,” she said.
Colleagues Hail Breakthrough Achievement
Officers and colleagues at the event described her accomplishment as a source of inspiration, especially for women in the Service.
Many praised her resilience and determination, noting that her success has opened new pathways for female officers to pursue careers in aviation and other specialised areas.
