The management of Covenant University has confirmed the untimely death of one of its students, Toluwase Jesutunmise Emmanuel, following a medical emergency during a football training session on campus.
In an official statement issued on April 8, 2026, and signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Timothy A. Anake, the institution disclosed that the incident occurred on Monday, April 6, 2026.
According to the statement, the student—described as diligent and vibrant—had participated in a football training session before stepping out to rest after complaining of leg pain and fatigue. Moments later, his teammates reportedly noticed he was gasping for breath.
“He was immediately rushed to the university’s Medical Centre, located directly opposite the playing field. However, by the time he arrived at the emergency unit, he had stopped breathing.
“Medical personnel promptly initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using an automated external defibrillator (AED), but all efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful. He was subsequently pronounced dead, with preliminary reports attributing the cause to a previously undisclosed heart condition,” the statement read.
The university emphasized that there was no negligence on the part of its medical staff, noting that all necessary equipment was available and appropriately deployed during the emergency response.
Management of the institution, led by the Vice-Chancellor, remained at the Medical Centre from the time of the incident until the arrival of the student’s parents and continued to support the family through the immediate aftermath.
The university community expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a painful moment not only for the institution but for society at large, which has been deprived of the young student’s potential.
Covenant University extended its condolences to the bereaved family and called on the public to keep them in prayers during this difficult period.
