Spain have been crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a thrilling final at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
Substitute Ferran Torres emerged as Spain’s hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute to hand La Roja their second FIFA World Cup title, 16 years after lifting their first trophy in South Africa in 2010.
The final was a tense and tactical contest, with both teams creating chances but failing to break the deadlock during regulation time. Spain eventually found the breakthrough in extra time when Torres clinically converted the winning goal, sparking wild celebrations among Spanish fans.
Argentina’s hopes of retaining the trophy suffered a major setback when midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off during extra time, reducing the reigning champions to 10 men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Lionel Messi and his teammates pushed for an equaliser until the final whistle but were unable to breach Spain’s resolute defence.
Spain’s triumph capped a remarkable tournament in which the European giants blended youthful brilliance with experienced leadership to overcome some of the world’s strongest football nations. The victory also ended Argentina’s reign as world champions and reaffirmed Spain’s place among football’s elite.
The final was attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, United States President Donald Trump, football dignitaries, celebrities and thousands of supporters from around the world, adding further prestige to football’s biggest showpiece.
