Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has urged Registry staff to uphold professionalism, confidentiality, efficiency and digital competence in the discharge of their duties, stressing that their responsibilities go beyond routine administration to the strategic management of the institution.
The charge was given at a capacity-building seminar organised by the College’s Registry Unit in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), Onike Chapter, on the theme, “The 21st Century Registry Staff as a Strategic Manager: Efficiency, Technology and Professionalism in the Tertiary Education System.”
The seminar was held at the College Hall.
Delivering the keynote address, the Chairperson of the NIM Onike Chapter, Dr. Beatrice Oreoluwa, challenged Registry personnel to embrace strategic thinking, professional ethics, effective communication and technology-driven administrative practices to improve service delivery.
She emphasised that the Registry should not be viewed merely as a clerical department but as a strategic management centre responsible for information management, human capital administration, records preservation and institutional coordination.
According to her, the effectiveness of a tertiary institution depends significantly on the efficiency of its administrative systems, making competence, accountability and continuous improvement essential qualities for Registry staff.
Drawing on the principles of scientific management associated with Frederick Taylor, Oreoluwa urged staff to identify and eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic procedures that delay service delivery.
She encouraged them to review routine processes, including transcript processing and official file management, to reduce turnaround time without compromising accuracy and accountability.
Oreoluwa also stressed the importance of collaboration among Registry units and other departments, noting that administrative efficiency could be undermined when officers worked in isolation rather than as interconnected parts of the institution.
On data protection, she reminded participants that Registry personnel handle sensitive information relating to staff recruitment, promotions, disciplinary matters and students’ academic records.
She therefore urged them to maintain strict confidentiality, integrity and responsible information management, drawing attention to the legal and professional implications of unauthorised disclosure of personal data under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
Registrar Highlights Registry’s Role in Institutional Governance
Earlier, the Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council of YABATECH, Mrs. Henrietta Adebola Badejo, described the seminar as a timely intervention aimed at strengthening the knowledge, skills and professional capacity of Registry personnel in response to the changing demands of tertiary education.
She noted that the Registry plays a critical role in institutional governance, policy implementation, documentation, coordination and regulatory compliance.
According to her, the quality of the Registry’s operations has a significant influence on the College’s overall performance and reputation.
Badejo urged staff to move beyond routine administrative practices by embracing innovation, technology and strategic thinking to advance the institution’s objectives.
She also encouraged participants to engage actively in the training and translate the knowledge acquired into measurable improvements in their respective areas of responsibility.
Deputy Rector Calls for Continuous Training
In a related address, the Deputy Rector, Administration, Arc. Femi Lawal, who represented the Rector, underscored the importance of continuous training and retraining in improving administrative performance.
He urged participants to apply the lessons learnt during the seminar to their daily responsibilities and share relevant knowledge with colleagues to strengthen institutional effectiveness.
The seminar reinforced the expectation that Registry professionals must demonstrate not only technical competence but also discipline, discretion, ethical conduct, teamwork and a service-oriented attitude.
It also highlighted the need to build an administrative culture that prioritises efficiency, accountability, digital innovation and continuous professional development.
For YABATECH, the initiative is expected to reinforce professional standards within the Registry and promote effective management of the institution’s human and administrative resources.
The participants were encouraged to make professionalism a daily practice, ensuring that every administrative process reflects the College’s commitment to excellence, responsive service delivery and effective institutional governance.
