The MTN Nigeria Foundation, in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the First Ladies of nine states, has commenced the distribution of learning materials to junior secondary school students in public schools across Nigeria.
The initiative, which began on October 6, covers Lagos, Edo, Cross River, Osun, Abia, Kaduna, Ekiti, Nasarawa and Anambra states.
The learning materials, which include books, school bags and water bottles, are intended to provide students with essential resources to support their education and improve their learning experience.
The first phase of the distribution took place in Lagos, Edo, Cross River and Osun states, while the remaining five states are scheduled to benefit later in October.
The programme forms part of the MTN Foundation’s continued investment in education and its commitment to providing young people with the resources and opportunities needed to learn, develop and achieve their potential.
Speaking on the initiative, the Executive Director of MTN Nigeria Foundation, Odunayo Sanya, represented by Stella Nwosisi, General Manager, Regional Operations, Lagos, MTN Nigeria, said the intervention was designed to provide practical assistance to students and ease some of the everyday challenges affecting their learning.
“At MTN Foundation, we believe that education remains one of the most powerful tools for transforming lives and building prosperous communities.
“Every child deserves not only access to education but also access to the tools and resources needed to learn effectively and succeed,” she said.
Sanya explained that the Learning Support Materials Initiative was designed to make learning more engaging, productive and rewarding by equipping students with essential educational materials.
The First Ladies of the nine participating states also supported the initiative by facilitating the distribution of the materials to selected public schools in their respective states.
Their involvement strengthened collaboration among the MTN Foundation, UNICEF and state-level stakeholders in extending educational support to students.
Speaking on the programme, the Lagos State First Lady, represented by Aolat Alade, Director of Procurement in the Deputy Governor’s Office, said the partnership was aimed at addressing some of the barriers that could prevent children from participating fully in education.
She stressed that access to learning materials, alongside support from communities and government stakeholders, was essential to creating a more supportive learning environment for children.
“I am particularly pleased that MTN Foundation continues to demonstrate its commitment to educational development and community impact through initiatives such as this.
“Education remains one of the most powerful instruments for personal development and social transformation. Therefore, every investment made in the education of our children is an investment in the future of Lagos State and Nigeria,” she said.
With the distribution continuing in Abia, Kaduna, Ekiti, Nasarawa and Anambra states, the initiative is expected to extend practical educational support to more students in public schools.
Through its collaboration with UNICEF and the participating states, the MTN Foundation aims to help students access essential learning resources and create opportunities for improved educational participation and development.
