Nollywood actress Atinuke Remilekun Kareem has died after battling breast cancer, weeks after appealing to Nigerians for financial support to continue her treatment.
Kareem’s death was announced on Tuesday by her colleague and Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), Owolabi Ajasa.
Before her death, the actress had publicly appealed for financial assistance, revealing that her family had spent heavily on her treatment and could no longer afford the rising medical expenses.
Kareem, who disclosed that she had two young children, had also acknowledged efforts by TAMPAN and other well-wishers to support her treatment.
Despite efforts to raise funds for her care, the actress eventually succumbed to the illness.
TAMPAN Ogun expressed appreciation to individuals who contributed financially, offered prayers and provided emotional support to Kareem and her family during her illness.
The association described her death as a painful loss and prayed for the repose of her soul and strength for her family, colleagues and loved ones.
Kareem’s death further adds to recent losses in the Yoruba movie industry, coming shortly after the death of veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, who reportedly died after battling stage-four cancer.
