The Edo State House of Assembly has entered a new phase of leadership following the resignation of its Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, who stepped down after more than three years in office.
Agbebaku said his resignation was based on personal reasons. However, The Daily Torch Media learnt that he was allegedly asked to resign or face impeachment.
While Agbebaku did not cite impeachment pressure as the reason for his resignation, other principal officers who served under his leadership were also reportedly suspended pending further investigation
Following Agbebaku’s resignation, the former Deputy Speaker, Maria Oredola Idahosa Idaiye, assumed leadership of the 24-member legislature.
Idaiye now takes charge at a politically significant period for Edo State, with the Assembly expected to continue its legislative and oversight responsibilities while the new leadership seeks to strengthen relations among lawmakers and with the executive arm of government.
In his farewell message, Agbebaku focused on his achievements in office and called for unity among lawmakers, peace and democratic stability in Edo State.
His appeal for calm comes as the Assembly adjusts to the change in leadership, with lawmakers expected to work together on legislation and oversight functions for the remainder of the current legislative term.
The development is expected to generate further political discussions as the new leadership settles into office and the circumstances surrounding the changes become clearer.
