A female motorist has died in a tragic lone-vehicle crash at Mongoro, inward Ile-Zik, along one of Lagos’ busiest arterial roads, prompting the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to renew its warning against excessive speeding.
According to LASTMA, the fatal accident occurred over the weekend when the deceased, who was driving a Toyota Sienna with registration number LND 162 HB, reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a roadside building.
The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in the driver’s instant death.
She was the only occupant of the vehicle.
LASTMA officials on routine patrol responded swiftly to the scene, deploying safety cones to cordon off the affected section of the road while directing traffic to prevent congestion and secondary accidents during the evacuation process.
Although the incident temporarily disrupted traffic, the agency said its officers restored the free flow of vehicles within a short time through coordinated traffic management efforts.
Security personnel from the Afonka Police Post under the Shasha Divisional Police Headquarters also provided security support throughout the emergency response and evacuation.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the crash as a painful reminder of the dangers of excessive speeding and reckless driving.
He urged motorists to obey speed limits, stressing that they are designed to protect lives and reduce road traffic fatalities.
“Every journey must be undertaken with prudence, patience and an unwavering commitment to established traffic regulations. No destination is worth the ultimate sacrifice of human life.
Excessive speed remains one of the foremost causes of fatal road traffic crashes, and motorists must exercise the highest degree of caution and responsibility while behind the wheel,” Bakare-Oki said.
The LASTMA boss also advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are mechanically fit before embarking on any journey, warning that any sign of mechanical fault should be addressed immediately by qualified technicians before the vehicle is driven.
The agency extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul.
