The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered all personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to stop unauthorised use of social media that could damage the image and professionalism of the Force.
The directive, issued on Tuesday and contained in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, comes amid concerns over officers posting videos, conducting live streams, and sharing content while in uniform without approval.
According to the Force, while social media remains an important tool for communication, officers must strictly follow the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy and existing regulations.
The IGP warned that personnel are not allowed to post content in uniform without authorisation, discuss official police matters publicly, or disclose sensitive operational information. He also prohibited the use of police identity for personal branding, entertainment, or commercial gain.
To enforce compliance, the IGP directed commissioners of police, commanders, and departmental heads to sensitise officers under their supervision, adding that supervisors would be held accountable for any breaches.
He also instructed the Force Intelligence Department and the X-Squad to monitor social media platforms and identify officers violating the rules.
The police leadership reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and protecting public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
