The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Oyo/Osun Area Command, has begun an investigation into a tragic incident that occurred on Sunday, March 15, 2026, along the Osogbo axis.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdulmalik Akintola, the Service expressed deep concern over a viral video and a related release from the Osun State Police Command regarding the event.
Officials said the development has generated significant public anxiety, prompting the Command to clarify that efforts are underway to establish the full facts.
Preliminary reports indicate that officers attached to the Command’s patrol team were on routine enforcement duty aimed at intercepting suspected smuggled foreign-used vehicles, commonly referred to as “Tokunbo.”
The operation, according to the statement, aligns with the agency’s mandate to curb smuggling and enforce trade regulations.
The Command, however, expressed regret over the loss of life recorded during the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family. It emphasized its commitment to the protection of human life and professional conduct in all enforcement activities.
As part of the review process, the Command confirmed that the actions of the officers involved — identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel — are being scrutinized to determine whether they complied with the Service’s Rules of Engagement.
The NCS also called for a coordinated and objective investigation in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, stressing the importance of forensic analysis, including the source of the discharged ammunition.
While urging the public to remain calm, the Command warned against spreading unverified information that could heighten tensions among security agencies or within the community. It assured that the outcome of the investigation would guide any necessary actions in line with Nigerian law.
