Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, spent Monday night in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after hours of questioning over alleged multi-billion-naira financial misconduct.
Sources said El-Rufai arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja around 10 a.m. in response to an invitation linked to a 2024 report by the Kaduna State House of Assembly. The report accused his administration of financial mismanagement, irregular loan utilisation and abuse of office between 2015 and 2023, alleging that about N423 billion was diverted.
The EFCC confirmed he honoured its invitation but declined further details, noting that investigations had been ongoing for months.
Separately, the Federal Government filed criminal charges against the former governor at the Federal High Court, Abuja, accusing him of unlawfully intercepting communications related to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, contrary to provisions of the Cybercrimes Act.
In another twist, the Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly reopened its probe into the 2019 disappearance of government critic Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata. Security sources said investigations are ongoing.
El-Rufai has denied all allegations, insisting the probes are politically motivated and that all loans secured during his tenure were lawfully applied.
