Fresh indications emerged on Monday that the impeachment process initiated against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara may stall following reports of behind‑the‑scenes intervention by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Twenty‑six lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly, many aligned with the faction loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, recently began impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy over alleged gross misconduct. [1]
However, sources familiar with the matter say President Tinubu has signalled his displeasure with the move and is urging lawmakers to abandon the impeachment bid in the interest of peace and stability in the state. The reported intervention comes amid broader efforts to de‑escalate political tensions and prevent the crisis from deepening.
A prominent Niger Delta elder, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that discussions are ongoing behind the scenes to resolve the matter without further escalation, and expressed optimism that the impeachment proceedings may not go forward.
