The Ogun State Police Command has pledged to intensify security preparations for the 2027 general elections, with Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni declaring that the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will become the Command’s second operational base until the elections are concluded.
Ojajuni made the declaration on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, during a strategic visit to the Ogun State INEC office in Abeokuta, where he met with the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs Feyijimi Saseyi.
The visit focused on strengthening security arrangements for INEC personnel, facilities and electoral materials ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Describing INEC as a critical institution in Nigeria’s democratic process, the police commissioner stressed the importance of sustained cooperation between the Police and the electoral body to ensure peaceful and credible elections.
“From now until the end of the 2027 General Elections, the INEC office will become our second office,” Ojajuni said.
He explained that the Command’s security strategy would prioritise intelligence-led policing, early threat assessment, effective information sharing and coordinated deployment of personnel.
According to him, the measures are designed to protect electoral officials, voters, election materials and facilities while ensuring that security operations remain professional, impartial and consistent with the law.
Police Strengthen Inter-Agency Collaboration
Ojajuni also recalled a security workshop organised by the Command in Abeokuta for security agencies and other relevant stakeholders as part of preparations for the 2027 elections.
He noted that INEC participated in the engagement, which provided an opportunity to strengthen cooperation and improve coordination among stakeholders on election-related security matters.
The commissioner emphasised that effective collaboration among security agencies, electoral officials and other stakeholders would be essential to preventing violence and maintaining public order before, during and after the polls.
INEC Promises Transparency
In her response, Saseyi commended the commissioner for the visit and reaffirmed INEC’s readiness to work with the Police and other relevant stakeholders towards credible elections.
She pledged that the Commission would remain transparent and committed to its electoral responsibilities.
“On our part, we will also be open, transparent and committed to this assignment so that, at the end of it all, we will achieve free, fair, transparent and credible elections,” she said.
Police Warn Political Stakeholders Against Violence
The Ogun State Police Command urged political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders to respect the law and refrain from violence, intimidation or any action capable of undermining the electoral process.
The Command also encouraged residents to report credible security threats promptly through the nearest police station or established police communication channels.
It cautioned the public against spreading unverified information that could create unnecessary tension or disrupt public peace.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to working with INEC, other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to safeguard lives and property and support a peaceful electoral process.
It also called on residents to reject electoral violence, respect democratic institutions and cooperate with lawful security measures as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
