The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and China’s state-owned Xinhua News Agency are exploring a strategic media partnership to strengthen information exchange and promote international cooperation in the fight against corruption.
The proposed partnership was discussed when a delegation of Xinhua media professionals, led by the agency’s Deputy President for Africa, Mr. Gui Tao, visited the ICPC headquarters in Abuja on Saturday.
During the meeting, Gui stressed the importance of accurate and balanced reporting in promoting international cooperation. He expressed Xinhua’s readiness to collaborate with the ICPC in publicising the commission’s anti-corruption initiatives to a global audience.
He noted that corruption was a transnational challenge requiring cross-border cooperation, including collaboration among media organisations.
Receiving the delegation, ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, described the proposed partnership as an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria-China relations and support efforts to combat corruption, particularly illicit financial flows and the cross-border movement of proceeds of crime.
Aliyu emphasised the media’s critical role in shaping public perception, promoting transparency and mobilising citizens to support the fight against corruption.
He called on Xinhua to assist the commission in strengthening its media and public communication activities through technology transfer and professional training for staff of its Media and Public Communications Unit.
According to him, the proposed capacity-building initiative would improve the commission’s information dissemination and enhance the international visibility of its anti-corruption activities.
In his response, Gui reaffirmed Xinhua’s willingness to provide technical support and training opportunities for ICPC media personnel.
He said the agency’s extensive global network could be leveraged to showcase Nigeria’s anti-corruption reforms and achievements to an international audience.
Gui added that the partnership would be mutually beneficial and based on shared commitments to integrity, transparency and public accountability.
Xinhua, China’s official state news agency, maintains a broad international presence, including across Africa, where it reports on economic development, trade, culture and social issues while promoting information exchange between China and African countries.
The proposed collaboration is expected to strengthen the ICPC’s international media presence, promote Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts globally and deepen cooperation between Nigeria and China in media, governance and the rule of law.
