The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, has warned that illicit financial flows (IFFs) continue to deprive Nigeria of critical resources needed for national development and the provision of essential social services.
Aliyu spoke during the official flag-off of a three-day combined capacity-building workshop on Money Laundering and Illicit Financial Flows, alongside an Anti-Corruption Leadership Series, held at the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN), Keffi, Nasarawa State.
The workshop brought together public officers, civil servants and representatives of various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to strengthen their capacity to identify, prevent and report suspicious financial transactions.
The ICPC chairman said the economic consequences of financial crimes are ultimately borne by ordinary Nigerians through the loss of public revenue and resources that could otherwise be channelled into development and social services.
“Enforcement is only one leg of the fight against corruption. Sustainable anti-corruption requires prevention through knowledge, integrity, and leadership,” Aliyu said.
He added that while the benefits of illicit financial flows accrue to a privileged few, the wider society bears the cost through lost revenue and reduced resources for development.
ICPC Targets Stronger Capacity Against Financial Crimes
Aliyu said the workshop was designed to equip public sector officials with practical knowledge and skills to detect, deter and report suspicious financial movements within government institutions.
He urged participants to apply the knowledge gained from the training in their respective organisations and become ambassadors of transparency, accountability and integrity.
According to him, strengthening preventive measures remains essential to complement enforcement efforts in the fight against corruption and financial crimes.
Aliyu Inspects ACAN Facilities
During his visit, the ICPC chairman also inspected facilities at the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria to assess its immediate infrastructure and development needs.
He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to transforming ACAN into a world-class training institution capable of competing with leading anti-corruption and governance institutes globally.
Aliyu said a stronger and better-equipped academy would enhance the capacity of public officials and other stakeholders to prevent corruption, money laundering and illicit financial flows.
He urged participants to ensure that public resources are protected, retained within the economy and effectively deployed for the benefit of Nigerians.
