A fire outbreak hit the Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Apapa, Lagos, damaging offices and equipment before emergency responders brought the flames under control.
The incident began around 10:35 AM on Monday, September 28, 2026, when thick smoke was spotted coming from the command’s newly constructed conference hall. Duty officers immediately triggered emergency response protocols to contain the blaze while awaiting reinforcements.
Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene by 11:25 AM and quickly extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading further through the facility.
The Nigeria Customs Service confirmed that despite the damage to property and office equipment, no injuries or fatalities occurred.
The command assured the public and maritime stakeholders that core operations remain fully functional and unaffected by the incident. A specialized investigative committee has been set up to determine the cause of the blaze and recommend preventive measures.
Nwosu Clarine Chibunna, Deputy Superintendent of Customs and Acting Public Relations Officer for the Western Marine Command, commended the swift action of the emergency teams and reiterated the agency’s commitment to safety, security, and uninterrupted operational efficiency.
