Ahead of the 2027 Ogun State governorship election, indigenes of Ogun State residing in Enugu State have pledged their full support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring an intensive grassroots mobilization campaign to secure victory for the opposition party.
The association made this commitment on Friday while hosting the PDP Deputy Governorship Candidate for Ogun State, Hajia Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, during a reception in Enugu. Kolapo, a prominent member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), was in the coal city to participate in the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference.
Addressing the gathering, the Chairman of the Ogun Indigenes Group in Enugu, Dr. Lekan Oladapo, revealed that the association had thoroughly reviewed the manifesto of the PDP governorship candidate, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu. He stated that the group is convinced Adebutu and Kolapo possess the vision and integrity required to drive socio-economic development and improve citizen welfare in Ogun State.
Expressing concern over the current state of governance, Dr. Oladapo noted that Ogun State has fallen short of its true potential and urged indigenes across the country and the diaspora to take an active role in shaping the state’s political trajectory.
”Ogun State, by all standards, is not where it should be,” Oladapo stated. “We are far behind where we ought to be at this stage, but we have vowed to get it right in the 2027 general elections. The votes for the PDP will be without sentiment. We will mobilize heavily, sensitize our communities across all zones, and vote.”
He added that several group members have already transferred their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) back to Ogun State or completed fresh registrations to ensure their participation at the polls.
Unlocking Ogun’s Economic, Tourism, and Herbal Potential
Beyond electoral politics, the group raised key strategic priorities for Ogun State’s future development, urging greater investment in infrastructure, cultural heritage, and local industries.
Dr. Oladapo highlighted the economic untapped potential of historic hubs like Abeokuta and Ijebu-Ode, noting that targeted investments in heritage tourism could yield significant state revenue. Furthermore, he advocated for government policies supporting the commercial production and export of local herbal products to generate foreign exchange.
Commending Sowunmi-Kolapo’s career and public standing, Oladapo added: “You are a virtuous daughter of our land, and we have read so much about your achievements. We are confident that your inclusion alongside Hon. Adebutu gives the PDP a winning ticket.”
”Vote Out Pain”: Kolapo Pledges Accountable Leadership
Responding to the endorsement, Hajia Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo expressed deep gratitude for the spontaneous reception, describing the support from her home state’s diaspora as deeply humbling.
She assured the group that an Adebutu-led administration would strictly fulfill its campaign promises, prioritizing inclusive economic growth and grassroots development. She also acknowledged the long-standing philanthropic efforts of the Adebutu family across Ogun State, noting that their commitment to public welfare predates executive office.
Encouraging members to maintain their momentum ahead of the 2027 polls, Kolapo urged voters to stand firm against political intimidation.
”I am indeed humbled by this short but significant reception. I only came to attend the NGE conference as a member of the Guild and never expected this show of solidarity,” Kolapo said. “Tell those you have influence over to come out and vote out pain. They should not be intimidated—no one intimidates a child in their father’s house.”
She promised to convey the group’s developmental recommendations directly to the governorship candidate, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, as the campaign continues to build momentum nationwide.
