Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has stated that petrol costs more than ₦3,000 per litre in the United Kingdom, arguing that Nigerians are paying significantly less for the commodity despite recent increases in domestic pump prices.
Okpebholo made the remark on Thursday, September 24, 2026, while speaking at the flag-off of “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” in Edo State.
The governor shared that during a visit to London the previous week, he decided to compare petrol prices in the UK with what motorists pay in Nigeria. According to him, he and a friend stopped at a filling station in London specifically to check the rate following public concerns over fuel prices back home.
”Let me tell you, after conversion, it’s about ₦3,000-something for one litre of fuel,” Okpebholo said.
Based on his findings, the governor argued that Nigerians enjoy relatively lower fuel prices compared to motorists in the UK.
”We are doing very well here,” he added, while reiterating his full support for President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies.
Recent market reports show petrol selling for around ₦1,400 per litre in several parts of Nigeria, though rates vary depending on location and retail station. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited recently listed pump prices at ₦1,385 per litre in Lagos and ₦1,430 in Abuja.
Meanwhile, in the UK, average petrol prices stood between £1.72 and £1.74 per litre during the third week of September 2026—translating to slightly above ₦3,000 at prevailing foreign exchange rates.
Defending the Federal Government’s economic direction, Okpebholo described the ongoing reforms as difficult but necessary, appealing to Nigerians to remain patient as the benefits unfold.
