Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have recovered a stolen 2016 Toyota Camry from a hotel in Ifo less than eight hours after it was reported stolen, arresting one suspect in connection with the incident.
The vehicle, belonging to an Indian national based at the Ilupeju Industrial Estate, Lagos, was allegedly stolen on September 9, 2026, by the driver’s aide, identified as Waidi Olaide Kolawale, who was reportedly employed only two days earlier.
Kolawale allegedly told his employer that he was taking the vehicle to a nearby vulcaniser to repair a tyre but reportedly absconded with the car.
Following the report, the vehicle was electronically tracked to the Ifo axis. The information was immediately relayed to the Divisional Police Officer, Ifo Division, CSP Kamorudeen Olabisi, who deployed surveillance and anti-robbery operatives.
After tracking the vehicle through several locations, the operatives located it at a hotel in Ifo at about 8:30 p.m.
According to the police, Kolawale fled the scene with the vehicle’s ignition key when he sighted the operatives, while his alleged accomplice, Monday Adetunji, was arrested.
Preliminary investigation reportedly revealed that the suspects had approached a mechanic to remove the vehicle’s catalytic converter, but the mechanic declined.
The recovered vehicle has been secured, while police efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the Ifo operatives for their swift response, professionalism and vigilance.
The Command also urged vehicle owners to use tracking devices and additional anti-theft measures, including steering and tyre locks.
Hoteliers were advised to strengthen guest and vehicle verification procedures, maintain accurate records and report suspicious persons, vehicles or activities to the police.
